Shape design and traditional drawing

The goal of the workshop is to demonstrate how traditional medias influences a notable portion of the design work I have been doing for the past 15 years.

We’ll talk about the magic trick drawing is and how to make audiences believe a flat two dimensional image gives the illusion of the missing third one.

Even though I work a lot on my tablet, the shape design part always begin with pencil and paper. To some it might feel like the limits that it brings would make the work harder and slower but I am convinced of the opposite. I managed to turn the few constraints to my advantage, it helped me to develop my style and to brand myself somehow.

We will tackle both shape design and traditional rendering process through a series of exercises where the participants will design different elements before combining them with each other in a balanced way. We will tackle organic and architectural shapes, talk about how to deal with references and go to the different tools and technique that will help to deliver an efficient design.

Tools :

Some paper you’re comfortable with, no need to go fancy and some good old copy paper

A few pencils ranging from 2H to 4B
A mechanical pencil
A good pencil sharpener

A regular eraser and a kneaded eraser (if you have an electrical one bring it too !)

A couple paper stumps for smudging and blending
