ILLUSTRATION WORKSHOP with Dani Díez.

The workshop focuses on the design, development and presentation of characters, from the blank paper to the final render of the character. Includes 2 live demos, one with traditional tools and another focused on digital ones.
Attendees will also create a character from scratch and develop it to the final render with Dani Diez. During demos and work time Dani will host discussions on the usual requested topics she receives, such as balancing personal projects and work, portfolio development, how to grow your social media, and tricks she’s learned over the years.

Content

– Author’s introduction. A presentation to show the path and highlighting the moments that have determined her career.
– Character design theory. Short presentation and discussion on what good character design is. How to overcome blank paper, creativity techniques and information sessions. Example of what Dani usually gets from a client.
– Sketchbook. Design techniques and tools used. (pencils, paper, quick color tools). We will start working on small designs in the sketchbook. We will create a briefing and Dani will do a Demo 1 using my sketchbook. At this point we are trying to find just the idea behind the character.
– You all draw. Sketches
– Clarity of characters and narrative. Dani will talk about clarity in design. How to clean your idea from the sketch
– Silhouette, weight and balance. Talk about shapes, seating areas, silhouettes, composition, balance, etc. purely visual point of view what makes a character interesting.
– Rendering techniques and tools. (Photoshop or Procreate, Brushes). Presentation on the workflow that Dani uses for characters. Breakdown of the brushes and tricks used and where to focus depending on which stage of the design you focus on.
– Color palettes and final rendering. I talked about color, focusing on how to get a vibrant but still cohesive palette on your characters and how to get a 3D finish without spending an incredible amount of hours.

– Demo 2. You will develop a sketch produced the day before and take it to the final render using Photoshop or
Procreate.
-Everyone draws. Do.
-Feedback. Dani will review your work one by one and give everyone personal feedback while they draw.
– If there is time, a portfolio review will also be done.
