COURSE CONTENT
In this course, I would like to share my personal experience as a picture book illustrator. I’ll talk about the first steps, such as gaining visibility, connecting with fellow professionals, dealing with publishers, and negotiating contracts. That’s the more practical side of the profession, but I’d also like to discuss the more personal aspects: the fears, the creative blocks, and the search for a unique style, a personal voice.
We will address the first step in creating a picture book for the illustrator: the bare text.
We will reflect on the space the text leaves for the illustrator in the book and what the illustrator contributes as an author. Through three of my latest books, I will explain my processes and we will do a practical exercise with a given text.

And finally, I will propose two exploration tools: inventories and maps. With these structures, we will develop a final exercise: a proposed album.

MATERIALS:
Everyone can bring to the course whatever materials they feel most comfortable working with,
keeping in mind that we will be developing sketches of ideas and stories. The magic
of the group is that you don’t just learn from the workshop leader; the work and perspectives
of your classmates are just as enriching, if not more so. Therefore, personal projects, sketchbooks, and portfolios are welcome if you’d like us to review them together.
