ONLINE COURSE: Storytelling through characters and backgrounds with María Pareja

Duration: 6 weeks. June-July 2024.

Schedule: 05:30pm to 08:30pm (Madrid, Spain, Time)

Levels: All levels are welcome.

Format: Live classes with demos, exercises, feedback and tutorials. Classes will also be recorded.

ONLINE COURSE: Storytelling through characters and backgrounds with María Pareja

Week 1: Presentation. General dynamics of classes, calendar and tasks. Create a coherent style and story. Searching for references and planning an illustration in terms of characters and backgrounds. The importance of thumbnails and character sketches, finding our voice.

TASK 1: Think about a story you want to tell through an illustration, create small thumbnails and character sketches that we will then develop and integrate into two or three final images.

June 20. Thursday. 5:30 pm. to 8:30 p.m.

June 25th. Tuesday. 5:30 pm. to 8:30 p.m.

Week 2. Character design. Creation of characters that give life to our story. the anatomy, the importance of a powerful pose, the level of realism and/or a graphic style (volume/ 2D). The importance of references when finding your own style. Learning to find the level of detail necessary to tell a story, simplification. How to generate similar elements in your characters so that they are part of the same world without being repetitive.

TASK 2: Create 3 different characters that are part of the same story and then integrate them into our final illustration. First pass, sketches.

Week 3: We will continue with the characters. .Costume elements, the importance of backstory when generating credible, interesting and relatable characters. The importance of each artist’s own experience and personal circumstance. Visual language and how it will affect our design decisions regarding overall illustration. The color in the characters, finishes and textures.

TASK 3: Enrich the characters through costumes, props, and create a more finished version of them.

July 4th. Thursday. 5:30 pm. to 8:30 p.m.
July 8. Monday. 5:30 pm. to 8:30 p.m.
July 9th. Tuesday. 5:30 pm. to 8:30 p.m.

Week 4: Introduction to funds. Search for references. The importance of a good layout. Composition, values and depth. Level of detail, according to the style, and in accordance with our history. Create a focus to guide the eye and make your image more interesting and easier to read. The flow of a fund. Perspective or not? Find what works for your narrative. The weight of the characters in the background.

TASK 4: With your characters and story in mind, create 2 Layouts. Starting from the initial thumbnails, work on the grayscale composition.

July 11. Thursday. 5:30 pm. to 8:30 p.m.
July 15. Monday. 5:30 pm. to 8:30 p.m.
July 16th. Tuesday. 5:30 pm. to 8:30 p.m.

Week 5: We will continue working on the backgrounds adding new elements. Color and the creation of an atmosphere. The level of finish, textures, amount of detail. How to get to a cinematographic image from a more cartoon or 2D style.

TASK 5: From your layouts, create 2 colored backgrounds with a more detailed finish and create 1 atmosphere variations for each one.

July 18. Thursday. 5:30 pm. to 8:30 p.m.
July 22. Monday. 5:30 pm. to 8:30 p.m.
July 23th. Tuesday. 5:30 pm. to 8:30 p.m.

Week 6:

Integration of characters and background for a solid and coherent style. Posing our characters in the scene. Last minute touch-ups to improve the image even further. Special effects, lighting on the characters and other elements that help us integrate.

TASK 6: Include your characters in the scene and create two final images that tell a story in a coherent and attractive way.

What happens if one day I can’t watch live classes?

• No problem. All classes are live but will also be recorded and published on our platform. So you can see them whenever you want during the duration of the course. This means that if you cannot attend your live class at the stipulated time, you will be able to view them on the platform until the end of the course. These video classes published on the platform can be viewed unlimitedly during the duration of the course but cannot be copied or downloaded. They can also be viewed for 6 months once the course has finished.
