ONLINE COURSE: Visual Development and Environment with Nevena Nikolcheva.

Intro to the course and overview :
We are going to be using fundamental knowledge (understanding of composition , design and
color) to build our understanding of visual development while working on a personal project you
can put in your portfolio at the end of these 6 weeks .
We are going to be working on :
● Value compositions and color keys
● Study different light scenarios of a space to communicate different emotions and ideas
● Explore a variation of render styles that add each a different feel to the world you are building
● We will put into practise simultaneously different basic knowledge and newly learned knowledge to explore possibilities for a space in your favorite world you would like to develop
● Work on details (props for your world) that complement the environment and make it feel more believable and complete
● Finish details of an establishing shot and render it as best as we can in your favorite
render style (or combination of render styles).
Every week we will be talking about how and where what we are learning is used , why , what to
expect from your team and your leads, how to improve on your own for the future endlessly, how
to learn from your mistakes and turn them into a stepping stone for the future.
At the end of every lecture there might be a small demo of me painting to show an example of
how to do something unless there are many questions from the students.

Week 1. Composition with valuesWe are going to be talking about gathering references for a work project and for yourself and the importance of that as well as how to use your reference and the different kinds .
You will be asked to pick a favorite story , book , tale or a personal story , for which you will gather reference. We are going to be talking about different kinds of environment you could be exploring and how to approach that.
The importance of sketching out ideas as thumbnails with black and white and/or color.

Task for the week – gathering reference and value sketches – pick a story – can be a fairy tale , a
book or some famous story most people are aware of (like a natural disaster scenario or a popular holiday in your country you like celebrating ) , gather references , make 5 raw small block out studie sketches (in color and black and white) of photos (can be any environment – try to use good composition and light for what you want to communicate ) The thumbnails will be supporting key moments and environments of your story and will help you for your future tasks.

Thursday, November 7. 5:30 pm. to 8:30 p.m.
Monday, November 11. Monday. 5:30 pm. to 8:30 p.m.
Tuesday, November 12, 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Week 2. Color and Light
We are going to talk about light scenarios and what role and meaning they have.
Importance and meaning of color scripts to a story .
What and why we explore variations of those and how is that important for you in the industry and how it is used when working on a project.
We are going to explore different ways of practicing light scenarios and implementing that exploration into your work .

Task for the week – Study of a space with different light – take a space you like and/or know well
and make studies of it in different light scenarios – you can take photos and/or use reference –
can be a street corner , your kitchen sink space, a local church , your favorite park or anything else – aim for 3 light scenarios , try to have a big difference in the mood and the story you try to tell with the light set ups.

Thursday, November 14, 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
Monday, November 18. 5:30 pm. to 8:30 p.m.
Tuesday, November 19, 5:30 pm. to 8:30 p.m.

Week 3. Render Style
We are going to be talking about different render styles and how they are used in the
entertainment industry and why . We will explore how and why it would be beneficial to you to
explore different render styles and why it’s good to have a favorite one. We are going to be talking about working in a team and sharing a rendering style – how to do it and why it’s important.
We are going to explore the technical and practical way of achieving a certain rendering style.

Task for the week – render a very small and simple scene (a bloody letter and a feather on a
table , a pair of shoes and some shoe shine or ball, unpacked bag of groceries, a magical tree
on top of some rocks, a photo booth in the snow , small shop front etc. – something small from
the world of your story, some key objects preferably) in 3 different styles. The scene has to have different material types so we clearly explore differences in denreding.

Thursday, November 21, 5:30 pm. to 8:30 p.m.
Monday, November 25, 5:30 pm. to 8:30 p.m.
Tuesday, October 22, 5:30 pm. to 8:30 p.m.

Week 4. Putting the ingredients together
The students are going to start understanding how and why visual development is built from the
different aspects of the work they have done and how to think about that in a simple way yet to
have endless possibilities to explore, improve and develop.
Story + Object design + Specific rendering = visual development for props
Story + Space design + Light design + Specific rendering = Environment visual development
We are going to explore why and how using parts of the environments rather than the whole
space and understand why various sizes of details matter and how to think about their relationship .

Task for the week – have 4-5 of your favorite (key) objects (props from a scene that they
previously explored – preferably from task one from your favorite story) sketches rendered (special designs or everyday objects) in your favorite render style . Try to have it connected to a story that you like – it will help you with your two final tasks and build a nice little world you can put in your portfolio.

Thursday, November 28. 5:30 pm. to 8:30 p.m.
Monday, December 2, 5:30 pm. to 8:30 p.m.
Tuesday, December 3, 5:30 pm. to 8:30 p.m.
