ILLUSTRATION WORKSHOP | CHARACTER DESIGN | with Esther Morales. 

During this three-day workshop Esther Morales (character designer for several feature films and TV shows for studios such as Cartoon Saloon, Netflix Animation, Lighthouse Studios, Anima Mexico and Gigglebug) will unravel all the steps to become a character designer for the animation industry. From the early pre-production designs to the more technical aspects of the model sheets for production work, she will illustrate these steps with examples from different artists and her own work.There will be homework after each class and in-class exercises. Including groupal critiques as a way to better understand the concepts and portfolio review.

DAY 1

Introduction: Bio + Professional journey.

Theory class:

What is the role of a character designer in the animation industry?

Pre-production and early stages of character’s concept design.

Questions + first practice: research and create concept sketches for our own personal character design.

DAY 2

Theory class:

Production artwork: Model sheets and technical work for character design (expressions, poses, turnaround, mouth shapes, colour, etc.)

Questions + second practice: choose our final design and create some poses and expressions focusing on the storytelling.

DAY 3

Theory class:

How to create and compose a professional character design portfolio.

Questions + third practice: finish the material from the previous days + gather them in an appealing template to be part of our portfolio.

Groupal critique of the final results + individual portfolio reviews.

Recommended materials:

Laptop/PC with a drawing software (Photoshop, Procreate or similar) + Tablet.

Traditional media tools (optative materials for the early creative research of the characters).
