GOUACHE WORKSHOP with Tiffanie Mang.

In this three day masterclass, Tiffanie will be sharing the power of creating plein air thumbnail studies from a limited palette and taking that to a more refined study in the studio.

On Day 1, students will focus on finding compositions with notan studies with two values.  This will help students practice the art of simplification, grouping, and seeing past the literal.  Students will then practice painting 3”x3”  thumbnail studies with the limited palette, consisting of the primary colors, lemon yellow, alizarin crimson, ultramarine and white.  When going out to plein air, you want to bring the least amount of supplies with you as possible, and stripping down on your colors is a great way to practice the fundamentals of color mixing while still getting a wide range of color variation. Using less colors can actually be more freeing; you are forced to be more creative with the limited options that you have.

On Day 2, we will focus on expanding the palette to a wider range of warm and cool primaries and emphasize how to use the power of neutral grays to bring your painting to the next level. Students will work en plein air in thumbnails. Grays, more often than not, are the underrated and overlooked ingredients that can make a painting come alive.  They get a bad rep because it is so easy to mix “muddy colors”, when in reality, there is no such thing as a muddy color, but only muddy relationships of value.  In this masterclass, Tiffanie will show how to harness and transform any gray to work for your painting, and to be able to see past the color and understand the relationships between your hues.

On Day 3, students will bring their paintings back into the studio, and do a larger, more refined study based on one of the plein air studies done in the last 2 days. The focus for this day will be learning how to refine shapes and understand how to better design a painting so that it tells a compelling visual statement.
