Workshop Summary — Michelle Cheng

Objective
Over the course of three days, we will create a narrative illustration based on a personal memory. Through lectures and demos, I will break down my ideation process, develop compositions & color schemes that work in service of the story, and share rendering techniques. There will be additional emphasis placed on applying storyboarding concepts in visdev work, and finding personal voice.

Prerequisites
Participants should be familiar with how to navigate digital painting tools (Procreate, Photoshop, etc.) and have experience with observational drawing. Basic perspective and anatomy will not be covered in depth — lessons begin at an intermediate level.

Workshop Structure*
Day 1: Ideation & Composition
● My journey into art (educational background, building a career, past and current goals)
● Introduction to 3-day assignment
● Lecture Topics
○ Finding inspiration for stories
○ Research methods
○ Cinematography
○ Character posing
● Demo: solidifying a story idea for an illustration, building a moodboard, compositional
explorations. Students are encouraged to develop their own ideas and draw along.
Day 2: Color
● Review student work: rough compositions
● Lecture Topics
○ Color theory
○ How I experiment (blending modes, curves, inspirations from photography)
○ Establishing mood through lighting and color choices
○ Running diagnostics (contrast & affinity)
○ Line art
● Demo: Color variations, rough block-ins + linework
Day 3: Rendering
● Review student work: color roughs
● Demo: linework, texture, FX, running diagnostics, finishing touches
● Review key concepts + final advice
● Further exercise + resource recommendations
● Q&A / additional review time
* Topic schedule is subject to slight change

*Frequent questions:

What happens if I can’t see the classes live one day?

• No problem. All classes are live but will also be recorded and posted on our platform. So you can see them whenever you want throughout the duration of the course. This means that if you cannot attend your class live at the stipulated time, you will be able to see them on the platform until the end of the course. These video-classes posted on the platform can be viewed unlimitedly during the duration of the course but cannot be copied or downloaded. They can also be viewed for 6 months once the course is over.

When can I see the classes I did not attend live?

• 24-hour access to the virtual platform where you can consult all the information or documentation of the course, access all the classes that have already been taught or the proposed exercises. When, where and at the rate you want.
