ONLINE ILLUSTRATION WORKSHOP with Esther Zhu.
Course Objective:
In this three-day workshop, we will be creating an illustration that plays with the intersection of memory and fantasy. I will take you through my brainstorming process, the basics of color, simplifying forms through design, compositional storytelling, as well as my approaches to line-art and render/paint. Questions throughout the course are very welcome!
Day 1: Composition and Story
About me – my artistic journey + background
Ideation and Inspiration – finding good references and how to use them well
Basics of value, composition, and design to serve your storytelling purposes
Assignment introduction
Demo: building a mood-board, value and composition thumbnails, notan exercises
Day 2: Color and Line
Review of student moodboards and composition thumbnails
Basics of color in storytelling (saturation, high-key vs low-key painting, hue, contrast)
Demo: line-weight, stylization through simplifying forms, flat color
Day 3: Paint and Render
Review line-art pass + first color pass
Basics of painting, stylization through simplifying shapes and planes, intentionality with mark making
Demo: paint, texture, and polish

Laptop and/or tablet with either Photoshop or Procreate or similar drawing software
*Frequent questions:
What happens if I can’t see the classes live one day?
• No problem. All classes are live but will also be recorded and posted on our platform. So you can see them whenever you want throughout the duration of the course. This means that if you cannot attend your class live at the stipulated time, you will be able to see them on the platform until the end of the course. These video-classes, 1080p, posted on the platform can be viewed unlimitedly during the duration of the course but cannot be copied or downloaded. Class recorded can also be viewed for 6 months once the course is over.
When can I see the classes I did not attend live?
• Access to the virtual platform where you can consult all the information or documentation of the course, access all the classes that have already been taught or the proposed exercises.
