ONLINE COURSE: Character Design with Javier Pinto.

Duration: 4 weeks. January-February, 2026.

Schedule: 5:30 pm to 8:30 pm (Peninsular Time, Spain)

Levels: All levels welcome.

Format: Live classes with demos, exercises, feedback, and tutorials. Classes will also be recorded.

Language during the workshop: English.

Price: €300

Throughout the course, we will cover:

Week 1 –

Topic: Exploration Part 1 – Idea Generation, Exploration, and Silhouettes

Introduction to the most creative and fun stage of Character Design: initial exploration.

Exercises to stimulate creativity through silhouettes, color, and unconventional lines.
Focus on breaking rules and experimenting freely.
Live Demo: Developing a concept, for example, «Billy, a monster in the High School!», generating 10-12 different versions of the same character.
Objective: For each student to begin their own personal exploration during the week.

Week 2 –

Topic: Exploration Part 2 – Mixed Media and Creative Freedom

Live Demo: Continuation of the work begun last week.
Focus on using techniques such as digital collage and painting to enrich ideas and textures.
Total experimentation is encouraged: break, deform, play with ideas without fear.
At the end of the class, we will explain how to assemble and present our sheets with different options developed from the same concept.

Week 3 –

Topic: Refinement and Choice – Which Option Is Best?

Focus on decision-making, a key part of the design process.

How to select one idea from many, evaluating what works best in relation to the brief.
Explanation of the idea selection and review process. (The classic mix and match: the face of A with the body of B, but adjusting X feature…)
Presentation of the final option with color, texture, and a more defined focus.

Week 4 –

Topic: Expressions and Portfolio Building

Part One: Demo on cartoon expressions for our final character.
Tips and tricks for exaggerating shapes without losing solidity.

Part Two: Introduction to how to prepare a character design portfolio.
Review of the final mini-project.

A space to answer questions about the industry, portfolios, and career guidance.

What if I can’t attend the live classes one day?

• No problem. All classes are live, but they will also be recorded and published on our platform. This way, you can watch them whenever you want during the course. This means that if you can’t attend your live class at the scheduled time, you can watch them on the platform until the end of the course. These video classes, published on the platform, can be viewed an unlimited number of times during the course but cannot be copied or downloaded. They will also be available for viewing for six months after the course ends.

When can I watch the live classes I missed?
