PAINT WORKSHOP with Xavi Denia.
In this workshop we are going to work on the basic principles of portraiture.
We will start with the most simplified structure and little by little go to the study of each part in
particular, more detailed and defined.
A- On Thursday we will give the first theoretical part, talking about the structure of the portrait, the basic principles of light and shadow, and some simple notions of how color works, and different ways of using it in our work. Later we will do a demonstration.
We will use the last hour to warm up a little by doing some constructive drawing exercises. (construction sheet, if you have a laptop or tablet, everything is fine, otherwise you have to print the sheet)
B- On Friday we will start with the lace directly on the fabric using a pencil on the white fabric. We will fix the pencil drawing with turpentine and tone the fabric on top.
In the afternoons: We will start with monochromatic drawing in underpainting.
C- The remaining two days will be dedicated to painting and continuing to refine the drawing.
During these days we will analyze different paintings and talk about many theoretical concepts that will help us when making decisions and analyzing and interpreting our subject. The course will be very focused on understanding what we are doing in a rational way. We will use the last session in the afternoon to talk a little more about more abstract and aesthetic plastic effects.
Recommended materials:
-Colors:
-Windsor and Newton alkyd white (this color dries very quickly, it is important that you have it for the workshop to be able to paint every day with the dry paint)
-Yellow Ocher (the one from Windsor and Newton works very well.)
-Red (vermillion or something similar, it doesn’t have to be a very expensive gorse)
-Alizarin Crimson
-Transparent oxide red (Rembrandt brand)
-Raw Umber
-Ivory Black
-Brushes
-We want bristle brushes to start, and some softer brushes to refine. It’s good to have some smaller ones for details, and larger ones to cover larger areas or backgrounds. Having different brushes helps to have different strokes that will enrich your painting. Bring the brushes you have and that you like the most.
-Small pot for turpentine (the ideal is to have a double one)
-A pair of spatulas to mix and perhaps paint with them. I like one to be a little long and flexible so I can blend better. The ones that are very small are a little awkward to mix, so one can be more elongated and the other a little smaller.
-Masking tape
-Piece of fabric measuring 45cm x 65cm (I use Belgian linen prepared for oil paint, with a small weight)clasens 66, Velazquez….
-2 pieces of A3 size fabric in case we do a shorter exercise or study, such as a sphere or study of a feature of the face.
-Pallette
-Painting paper on top of the palette for faster cleaning (Optional)
-Small piece of tracing paper to put the leftover paint on
-Kitchen paper
– Soap to clean the brushes.
-Turpentine/turpentine for the first stain and for cleaning brushes.
-Flax oil.
-2B and HB pencil, eraser and sharpener. (To make the drawing on the fabric).
-A couple of A4 sheets. (To do the construction exercises on the first day)
