ILLUSTRATION WORKSHOP with Sean Andrew Murray.

3-day workshop with Sean Andrew Murray, freelance concept artist and illustrator, and creator of “The Great City of Gateway.” Clients include: Netflix Animation, Blizzard/Activision (Diablo IV), Legendary Pictures/Amazon Originals, Dreamworks Television, DC/Vertigo Comics, Sony Pictures, Wizards of the Coast, Sideshow Collectibles –

What I will cover in the workshop:

1.    “Tradigital” painting techniques – combining natural media and digital: my method usually involves a detailed pencil drawing, but that can sometimes start as a digital sketch, so there is a lot of back and forth.

2.    Sketchbooks and urban sketching. The importance of keeping a visual journal of your ideas and for recording the world around you. Learning how to “see” or “find” ideas by sketching from life.

3.    “Intuitive” drawing – letting abstract shapes and lines guide you – letting the ideas find YOU.

4.    How to collect and use reference – indirect reference method – looking at photo reference and historical reference after you have started your image to help solve problems.

5.    World-building: How to develop your own personal world-building project and make your ideas better.

Schedule:

Day01: Introduction

–       Talk about my work history, my personal philosophy about art, illustration and world-building, and discuss my ongoing project, “The Great City of Gateway.”

–       Discuss methods for developing your own world-building projects, and how to get started.

–       Sketching and reference-gathering techniques

Day 02: Process

–       Start the day with some urban sketching – looking at architecture, natural landmarks, signage, environmental effects, layers of history, all the little stories that the world around us can tell.

–       Use our sketches as inspiration for creating a new piece – take a sketch, match it with relevant reference, and create a new, imagined scene.

–       How to take a rough sketch and refine it into a detailed, finished drawing that will be a good base for a digital painting.

–       Drawing techniques: hatching, shading, shape-design, texture

–       Visual story-telling

Day 03: Painting

–       With a finished drawing in hand – let’s start painting digitally: how I use traditional drawings as a base for digital paintings.

–       Demonstrate my “3-layer” digital painting technique: underpainting, drawing, highlights and details.

–       Using reference directly and indirectly to inform the digital painting process.

–       Thinking about lighting, contrast and color choices.

–       Using atmospheric perspective and contrast to accentuate your focal point(s).

–       Learning to know when it’s Ok to start “noodling” on details

–       Q&A

Recommended materials:

– Laptop with Photoshop and a tablet or similar

– pencils, erasers, and sketchbook

– drawing paper, drawing board
