Content Summary: I am a visual development artist/texture artist in the animation industry. In this workshop, I will discuss the techniques I used in my award-winning 3D short film, “The Market,” to achieve a 2D and painterly look using Blender for your 3D environments.During the workshop, I will share my experiences as a freelance illustrator, texture artist, and animation filmmaker. Throughout the sessions, I will walk you through my pipeline for creating the film, demonstrating each step from concept art and modeling to texture painting and final compositing.
Introduction: Join me on the journey of making my film as I share behind-the-scenes insights, starting from storyboarding and animatic, all the way through 3D modeling and texturing to the final compositing.
Class Activities: We will begin with a simple scene demonstration, where I’ll cover concept art skills, composition, lighting, and color usage. We’ll also sketch a scene together, which we will later turn into a 3D model.
On this day, we will be 3D modeling based on the scene we sketched on the first day. I’ll also share my experience using Blender. During the morning session, our focus will be on 3D modeling, and I will demonstrate how I do simple UV unwrap. Afterward, we’ll import the scene into Adobe Substance Painter for texture painting.
In the morning session, I’ll dive into the process of texture painting and guide you through how I textured the characters in my film. Additionally, I’ll share the render settings I utilize in Blender to achieve the 2D aesthetic.
Throughout these 3 days, please don’t hesitate to ask any questions that may arise! I’m here to help and enhance your learning experience!
What you will need: Photoshop or Procreate for sketching, Blender (it’s free!) for modeling, and Adobe Substance Painter for texturing. if you don’t have any of the software listed above, you can still join the workshop for lots of fun behind the scene of my animation short!
