ONLINE ILLUSTRATION WORKSHOP with Sophie Li.

PLANNING:

Breaking into the industry.

  • From fanart to fitting into a pipeline (A bit about myself)

Character Design / Concept artist

OVERVIEW- what is required in the job?

  • Creating moodboard [one for art direction. One for actors/actresses, humans in real life]

  • Shape and silhouette [picture this]

  • Costume

  • Acting

  • Aesthetic – Adding flair to your character

  • Dividing cultural influence/ research + personal flair [70%+30% rule]

  • Creating a workflow + Time management

Mistakes along the way

  • Getting distracted by clothing details and forgetting that design has to serve story

  • Giving Options vs, making decisions

How LIFE DRAWING helped me in drawing characters/ creating concepts

  • Train me to pick visual interests within a character

  • Speed

  • Also to relax from drawing within the rules

Demo – what I think about when i create a character.
From research to roughs to a somehow finished pitch.
(This part I might plan to play a video of mine drawing and me talk over it, just to make sure that it goes smoothly? )

Course work (WORK IN PROGRESS)

  • Designing a character using prompt, and create versions of the same character in different plot points of the film (Beginning, middle, end)

  • Try to create crowd characters based off of your main character (world building in character design)

  • Recommended materials : Digital painting/ drawing tools is recommended. Though Sophie mainly works in digital, if you prefer, traditional tools such as pen and paper would of course suffice. Using collages to bash together your characters is also encouraged, so if you’d like to try that route, feel free to have some magazine clippings, scissors and glue ready.

*Frequent questions:

What happens if I can’t see the classes live one day?

• No problem. All classes are live but will also be recorded and posted on our platform. So you can see them whenever you want throughout the duration of the course. This means that if you cannot attend your class live at the stipulated time, you will be able to see them on the platform until the end of the course. These video-classes posted on the platform can be viewed unlimitedly during the duration of the course but cannot be copied or downloaded. They can also be viewed for 20 days once the course is over.

When can I see the classes I did not attend live?

• 24-hour access to the virtual platform where you can consult all the information or documentation of the course, access all the classes that have already been taught or the proposed exercises. When, where and at the rate you want.

*For any question, do not hesitate to contact us at the email: info@lagaleriaroja.com
