ONLINE ILLUSTRATION WORKSHOP with Matteo Bassini.

This three-day workshop will focus on providing participants with an immersive experience into my creative process. The aim is to create a complete (or at least try^^) Magic: The Gathering illustration from start to finish, demonstrating the full pipeline from sketch to final render.

Participants will have the opportunity to observe my approach, ask questions, and gain insight into the methods and decisions that go into creating artwork for a Magic card. Here’s the updated schedule:

Day 1: Starting from Scratch

  • Introduction: My journey as a Magic: The Gathering illustrator.
  • Conceptualization and Sketching: A live demonstration of how I approach creating an initial sketch based on a brief.
  • Interactive Q&A: Participants can ask questions about my thought process, tools, and techniques as I work on the composition.

Day 2: Building the Illustration

  • Blocking in Colors and Composition: Demonstrating how I lay the groundwork for the final piece, focusing on shapes, lighting, and color harmony.
  • Refining Details: Adding structure and depth to the artwork, with an emphasis on storytelling through visuals.
  • Participant Involvement: An extended Q&A session to discuss challenges in painting, design choices, and the industry’s expectations.

Day 3: Polishing and Finalizing the Artwork

  • Rendering and Final Touches: Completing the illustration, from detailing characters and environments to perfecting atmosphere and lighting.
  • Insight into Magic’s Standards: How to align the final artwork with Magic: The Gathering’s style and narrative goals.
  • Open Discussion: Participants are encouraged to ask questions about the entire creative pipeline, freelance work, and breaking into the industry.

The workshop will be centered on observing and learning from my live workflow, making it ideal for participants to gain a deep understanding of the artistic and technical aspects involved in creating a card illustration.

Recommended materials

Oh and on what participants will need is: a copy of Photoshop (Procreate is also fine) and a graphic tablet. I might also touch on the use of Blender (which I sometimes use for quick blockouts for specific illustrations), but given the duration of the course, I plan to just discuss it without providing any practical demonstrations.

*Frequent questions:

What happens if I can’t see the classes live one day?

No problem. All classes are live but will also be recorded and posted on our platform. So you can see them whenever you want throughout the duration of the course. This means that if you cannot attend your class live at the stipulated time, you will be able to see them on the platform until the course ends. These video-classes posted on the platform can be viewed unlimitedly during the duration of the course but cannot be copied or downloaded. Once the course is finished, they will be on the platform for 6 more months. In this way you can review content with ease.

When can I see the classes I did not attend live?

• Access to the virtual platform where you can consult all the information or documentation of the course, access all the classes that have already been taught or the proposed exercises. When, where and at the rate you want.
