ONLINE ILLUSTRATION WORKSHOP with Domenico Russo

The Workshop aims to tell the world of illustration through a two-way street: the first theoretical one, full of detailed visual examples and personal reflections; the second more practical one that will see the creation of a complete, unedited illustration from a simple outline.
After a brief introduction, we will focus on how to translate a story into an image, exploring illustration as a language, with its grammar, function and the ways in which it can be interpreted. In addition, we will look at the graphic elements used by the illustrator to make his or her work readable, effective and expressive: space management, language of shapes and balancing elements in the scene.
On the second day, we will delve into the rules of composition, revealing the mechanisms used to guide the audience’s gaze, paying special attention to the study of light and color.
On the third day, we will discuss the concept of “graphic style,” exploring different approaches to finding your own personal style. In addition, you will have the opportunity to show your work during a portfolio review session, during which you will receive feedback and tips for improvement.

DAY 1
-Introduction and personal presentation
-Illustration as language: function and interpretation
-The creative process: Searching for ideas and observing reality
-The fundamental elements: Space, Shapes, Balance.
-Practical demonstration: Realization of an illustration from an outline (Attention on Initial Sketch, exploration of forms, composition and set design)

DAY 2.
-Guiding the audience’s gaze: Composition of an image
-Light and color, as a storytelling tool
-Hands-on demonstration: Continuing the previous illustration with emphasis on characters.

DAY 3
-Illustration conclusion: final stages of the process.
-Useful tips for finding your own personal style
-Last part of Portfolio review

Recommended materials: Digital drawing programs such as Photoshop or Procreate. Pencils to paper for notes.
