Description
This workshop will show artists how to powerfully engage their audience through visual storytelling and
design. It is a serious exploration of how to use color, light, and design to create compelling concept art
and to design extraordinary locations.

Friday Afternoon: Creating Compelling Concept Art Through the Design of Color and Light
 The theatrical design and development process.
 The technical nature of color; what we need to know to help our audience believe.
 Organizing the complexities of color into engaging harmonies.
 Photoshop demo: building an image with color and light.
 Student assignment given.
 Q&A

Saturday: Color for Storytelling
 Choosing color palettes that create a full variety of moods.
 Illustrating emotional beats for storytelling.
 Color scripting to create a story narrative.
 Review of color scripts for popular animated movies.
 Photoshop demo: color scripting.
 Student assignment continued.
 Q&A

Sunday: Lighting design
 Choosing light sources and local colors.
 Staging images through the design of light.
 Designing light for storytelling narratives.
 Photoshop demo: lighting design.
 Student assignment critique.
 Q&A

RECOMMENDED MATERIALS : Tablet or laptop for sketching color ideas.

 

BIO:
Nathan Fowkes is a veteran entertainment industry artist with credits on 12 feature films including The Prince of Egypt, Spirit, several projects within the Shrek Universe, How to Train Your Dragon, The Legend of Puss in Boots, Rio2, Ferdinand and development art for Disney’s Raya and the Last Dragon.
Additionally, Nathan has been sought after as a consultant for game studios to enhance the quality of their theatrical presentation. He has worked with Blizzard Entertainment, King, Disney Interactive, Riot Games, Ubisoft, Rovio, Supercell and many others.
Nathan is also well known as a teacher of color, light, and design. He is a regular guest lecturer at Art Center College of Design and has taught at The Los Angeles Academy of Figurative Art and the Laguna College of Art and Design, his work can be seen at nathanfowkes.com
